Eligibility

Currently matriculated Barnard students who will be enrolled at the College for the Fall 2018 semester and meet one or more of the following criteria MAY be eligible to receive College-Subsidized Summer Housing for up to 12 weeks (10am Sunday, May 20 – 5pm Friday, August 10) during the Summer of 2018:

  • Barnard student working 30+ hrs/week working in an Barnard academic department, research lab, or Library & Academic Information Services (BLAIS)
  • Barnard student working 30+ hrs/week in an on-campus Barnard office which is a part of Student Services (Student Life, Admissions, Dean of Studies, Health Services, etc)
  • Barnard student working 30+ hrs/week in any on-campus non-Student Services Barnard office (ex. BCIT, Barnard Store, Bursar, Facilities, Mail Services, etc)
  • Barnard student working 30+ hrs/week in a full-time unpaid internship funded by an Alumnae / Donor Sponsored Internship Grant from Student Employment Services or the The Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Foundation Oscar S. Straus II Fellows in Criminal Justice

Students are required to get approval signatures from the appropriate departments and Vice-Presidents / Deans of the area (see Application process below).

Other students may be eligible for SRI Summer Housing through having a funded summer research position through the Summer Research Institute .

Please note that Residential Life & Housing is not in charge of the approval process and cannot answer questions for individual students as to whether their position is eligible or not for College-Subsidized Summer Housing and/or which positions are part of the Summer Research Institute (SRI).

Students may work one or more positions that total 30+ hours; however, each position that contributes towards the 30+ hour total must meet the eligibility criteria. Students who qualify for College-Subsidized Summer Housing by working in more than one location must obtain the required signatures for each position (see Application process below).

Students who graduate in May 2018, visiting students, and/or students not currently enrolled (i.e. students on leave or requesting to return for Fall 2018) are not eligible to for summer housing.

Students must be in "good standing" to be considered (no outstanding Bursar holds, disciplinary probation, etc).

Students whose Barnard employment or College-sponsored internship terminates (or who withdraw from the College) will cease to be eligible and must vacate summer housing.

Summer Sessions & Interim Housing

Summer housing is available for the following time periods:

  • Summer Session 1 – 10am on Sunday, May 20, through 12noon on Friday, June 29, 2018
  • Summer Session 2 – 10am on Sunday, July 1, through 5pm on Friday, August 10, 2018

Students who apply for both Summer Sessions will receive priority for assignment and may remain in housing between the two sessions (i.e. 12noon on Friday, June 29, through 10am on Sunday, July 1, 2018) at no additional charge.

Housing may also be available (see below) for the following interim periods: (see links for more information)

  • May Interim – 5pm on Friday, May 11, through 5pm on Sunday, May 20, 2018
  • August Interim – 5pm on Friday, August 10, through 9am on Saturday, September 1, 2018

The Application Fee and charge for summer housing will be billed to student accounts and may not be paid by a sponsoring department or program. A limited number of approved outside grants may be allowed to cover students' charges and are subject to approval by the area's Dean/VP/Provost (the charges will still be posted to student accounts, before being paid by the grant).

Eligible students will be provided with an assignment to a non-air-conditioned double room (in 600 W 116th St) at the rate of $287.50 per Summer Session (i.e. 25% of rate for students paying full price for summer housing).

Students may request via the online housing application to upgrade to a single or air-conditioned room (in CG or Elliott); however, due to the limited number of spaces available, upgrades are not guaranteed and not likely. The rates for these room types are covered in the chart above.

An extremely limited number of non-air-conditioned single rooms may be available as disability housing accommodations only (all requests for accommodations must be submitted to ODS by no later than Friday, April 13, 2018). The price for non-air-conditioned singles is $1095 per session or $2190 for both sessions.

Assignment to singles and/or room with AC will be prioritized first to students who are paying full-price for their summer housing. If any spaces are left over after assignment full-price students, they will be assigned to College-Subsidized students prioritized by application date, students who apply for both Sessions vs. just 1 Session, and class year. Students who may need a single and/or room with AC for a diagnosed disability or medical condition should submit a Disability Housing Request before 4pm Friday, April 13, 2018 (see below for more information).

Please note that students may not possess, install, or use window or portable air-conditioners in any rooms/buildings.

Any student whose summer room assignment has not yet been cleaned by the Facilities office by the start of Summer Session 1 or 2 may be required to move into a temporary room (in Reid Hall) until their summer assignment is available.

Application Process

To apply for Summer Session 1 and/or Session 2 (and May Interim, if applicable) students must complete the steps below before 4pm on Friday, April 27, 2018

If you are currently studying abroad, please ask your supervisor/sponsor to fill out & submit the Approval Signature Form for you -- it does not need your signature.

After obtaining the 1st signature (your Sponsor or Supervisor), you will need to submit the form to Milbank 105 before 4pm on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 . The Dean of the College Office will forward your form to the appropriate Dean, VP, or Provost Office. They will then submit your form for you to the Res Life office.

Students may work one or more positions that total 30+ hours; however, each position that contributes towards the 30+ hour total must meet the eligibility criteria. To apply for August Interim Housing , students must submit an application before 4pm Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

Disability Housing Accommodations

Students with a diagnosed disability who need disability-related housing accommodations (ex. AC) must submit a Disability Housing Request to the Disability Services office no later than 4pm on Friday, April 13, 2018 .

Students are required to reapply for accommodations each summer, even if they have received an accommodation in the past (or have already submitted a request for the following academic year). Late requests cannot be accommodated.

Assignments & Billing

Summer room assignments for students living on campus for Summer Session 1 are anticipated to be emailed to students by 10pm on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. Students not moving in until Summer Session 2 will be emailed their room assignment by Tuesday, June 26, 2018. Temporary room assignments in Reid Hall for May and/or August Interim will not be available prior to when students sign for their keys at the Res Life office.

There is no Summer Room Change Request process and requests for roommates are not guaranteed. Requests for suitemates cannot be accepted.

Summer housing charges (for May Interim, Session 1, and/or 2) will be placed on student accounts in mid-to-late May (and will be viewable on my.Barnard.edu). Charges will be payable to the Bursar office by the deadline provided by the Bursar office. Failure to pay your summer charges in full could result in loss of summer and/or academic year housing.

Charges for August Interim will be billed to student accounts in mid-July and must be paid by the August 1 Fall payment deadline.

Check-In

Students will be required to move by the deadlines below ; otherwise, they will be subject to fines and disciplinary action (which could include the loss of summer and/or academic year housing ).

Students will be able to sign for their room keys and check into Summer Session 1 housing between 10am-6:45pm on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at the Residential Life & Housing office (110 Sulzberger). Only the student themself may sign for their room key(s); friends and family may not check-in on behalf of a student.

Note: students who are in May Interim Housing must be checked out of their interim rooms by 5pm on Sunday, May 20, 2018.

Students who sign up for Summer Session 2 only will be able to sign for their room keys and check in between 10am-6:45pm on Sunday, July 1, 2018.

Students who wish to move in later than the first date of either Summer Session may do so, but they may only check in and get their keys when the Barnard Residential Life & Housing office (110 Sulzberger) is open (9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday; closed on holidays) and must be checked out of any interim housing by the deadline given. Evening and/or weekend late check-ins are not available.

Note: campus offices will be closed Monday, May 28, 2018, for Memorial Day and Wednesday, July 4, 2018, for Independence Day. Late check-ins are not avialable on these dates.

The cost for Summer Housing will not be prorated as a result of checking in late. Requests to check in early will not be considered .

Check-Out

Students will be required to move by the deadlines below ; otherwise, they will be subject to fines and disciplinary action (which could include the loss of summer and/or academic year housing ).

Students only staying for Summer Session 1 (but not Session 2) must check out by no later than 12noon on Friday, June 29, 2018 .

Students in housing for the entire summer or only Summer Session 2 must check out by no later than 5pm on Friday, August 10, 2018 .

When moving out, students must complete a check-out envelope at their residence hall front desk, in order to turn in their room keys. Students who fail to turn in their keys will be charged for an improper check-out as well as key replacement fees ($30 per key).

The cost for Summer Housing will not be prorated as a result of checking out early. Requests to check out late will not be considered .
